Tough midlands trip for the boys

Another monster away trip for the boys, although at least with some subs this time. Some tired end-of-term legs took a little while to warm up with a mad first ten minutes of play, mostly in our third of the pitch which eventually got Sutton a well worked goal that unpicked the defence and left Duncan with three places to be at once.

Ipswich settled and got passes strung together with dangerous attacks not quite getting through. A penalty corner was well worked with a slip behind the back to left slip but just couldn't quite find the man on the far post. But finding their rhythm Charlie drove down the left and fired towards goal with Alex deftly picking it in mid-air to send it into the roof of the net. 1-1.

Pressure from Sutton caused us lots of problems and saw them work in two more goals before half time including one off one of our defenders. They were well drilled and up for the game, their strength was getting to the ball carrier fast and applying the pressure, winning may turnovers as a result.

With encouragement from the coach at half time the second half saw Ipswich take control of the game for a good period with Charlie stealing one back with a weaving run into the left side of the D before sliding past the keepers legs for a great morale boost.

Sutton were self combusting but somehow holding us out and we were running out of time and options. Sutton managed to reset and come back at us with a dangerous attack leaving Duncan with a two on one, somehow he managed to cover both the lead runner and the slip left and keep us still only one behind. But with the final play of the game Sutton managed to steal a fourth.

Motm was hotly contested with mentions for Kishen on his debut, Duncan, and Charlie but goes to Jake for having another solid game including goal line clearances.

Thank you to all the parents who have trekked across the country again to support and keep the hockey journey going for the boys. Sadly the result means we are out of contention for national honours this year but with only Old Loughts to play we should finish third in our group which puts the boys in the top 12 in the country. Also thanks to Charlie Cooper for coming all the way to umpire.
